August, September and October 2016
Members attended this year's AGM at Ambleside Youth Hostel.
Reports from current trustees and members who had taken on particular responsibilities recalled another inspiring and exciting year packed with special events alongside regular paddling activities. New trustees elected were Ruth, Rowena, Steph and Pam.
Our three dragons, Mary, Phyllis and Lucy went into their winter sleep with founder members Sue and Louisa doing the honours.
A group of cancer survivors and supporters from Paddlers for Life Windermere took two of their dragon boats to Waterhead on Windermere. As well as enjoying a paddle and warm drink the paddlers sought to use the last 2016 paddle to promote breast cancer awareness. Many of the paddlers are cancer survivors and the paddling aids fitness and recovery after diagnosis and treatment.
Following a 'Flowers on the Water' ceremony, remebering family and friends not able to be with us, we paddled back.
Low Wood Hotel kindly provided scones and afternoon tea when we returned to the Low Wood Watersports Centre who kindly host our dragon boats.More photos in the gallery.
We had a fantastic day on the River Wear at Durham. The sun shone, the river was calm, the trees are just changing colour and there were beautiful views of the city landscape. In the morning we had a technical session, which lasted an hour and a half, so we honed up on our technique with the Serpees, under Keni’s watchful and encouraging eye.
A wonderful lunch of lasagne, salad and chocolate cake set us up for the afternoon.
Serpees and Paddlers were mixed together in the two boats for an afternoon of racing. It was brilliant! We came off the river happily tired after a great work out and lots of fun, jokes and laughter.
This regatta was jointly organised by Paddlers for Life UK, Low Wood Hotels and CBAevents and Paddlers for Life Windermere had two teams in the event. Other teams included paddlers from Manchester Dragoneers and Port Edgar Dragons as well as local organisations, businesses and schools.
Nine teams participated having three qualifying races each with other entertainments between the morning and afternon races. Teams participated in a Tug-of-war and a Hakka competition.
Pauline and Jim visited to name the new dragon boat 'Mary at Low Wood' remembering Mary who made the generous donation that allowed Paddlers for LIfe Windermere to purchase the boat.
It was a time for celebration of a family who made such a thoughtful gift.
Pauline and Jim announced the name of the new boat and 'dotted the eyes' of the dragon head to bring paddlers the protection of the dragon.
We also celebrated Vicky's birthday. She is a fantastic supporter of Paddlers for Life.
Members and supporters at Total Warrior Lakes 6th, August, 2016
Paddlers for Life cancer survivor members and supporters attracted a lot of attention from other participants, spectators, event staff and photographers this year with our pink and purple fancy dress, paddles and dragon hats.
The weather was very kind to us and it was really encouraging to get the shouts and support from Pam, Louisa, Eunice, Irene, Maureen, Helen, Lynn, John and Judy along with Nicola's family. Steve gave great support with a drink and snack stop after the half way mark and Sian was very creative and busy with her filming and photography.
Here we are around the halfway stage.
After the last climb. Ten kilometres and 30 obstacles almost over.
Meanwhile please consider making a donation to Paddlers for Life using this link, which could be increased with Gift Aid if you are a tax payer. Or put some money in an envelope and pass it on to our treasurer. The money will go towards day to day costs such as garage rental.
