Cancelled: Ambleside Walk due to flooding on some footpath sections.
February 23 @ 10:00 am - 3:00 pm
A walk of approximately 5 miles. It is planned that the walk is suitable for all levels of fitness.
Please find your own parking in Ambleside. Allowing for a walking pace of the slowest walker, snack stop and possible café visit I expect the walk to take over four hours so you need to pay 4 to 6 hours parking (£6). Please car share where possible. There are several car parks in Ambleside but they can get busy as it is a popular place for visitors and this is the end of half term week for schools. So please allow plenty of time to park and walk to the starting point.
Meet at 10-30 am in front of Ambleside Parish Centre adjacent to St. Mary’s church at the Rothay Park end of Vicarage Road, Ambleside (OS Grid Reference NY 37353 04404) See this Google Map .
Wear stout walking shoes or boots and warm layers of clothing with waterproof coat and trousers if you have them. Bring a packed lunch or snack and water or hot flask drink.
As this will be the first paddlers walk for some members please do not bring your dog, however well behaved they are, until we gauge how members feel about the presence of dogs.
We will walk through Rothay Park and out towards Rydal Water on the Under Loughrigg Road which runs adjacent to the River Rothay. This road is relatively free of traffic and has beautiful views of the river and surrounding fells.
We will walk just above Rydal Water, cross through the woods to White Moss and walk down the old ‘Coffin Route’ towards Rydal Mount and Rydal Hall where there is a café. Then back to Ambleside.
I have chosen this walk with little ascent as a gentler introduction for anyone who does not walk much.
Most surfaces for the first half of the walk will be good smooth walking surfaces. The return along the Coffin Route will have some slightly rougher path surfaces in places.
The walk is just over 5 miles in length.
Please email me, Nick Harrison, if you intend to join us for the walk so I have an idea of numbers and also if you have any questions about the walk.
My mobile is 07 898 114 150. It is worth putting my mobile on your phone if you are coming on the walk in case you are delayed arriving at the meeting point.
