‘Eye dotting’ and supporters day 2019

‘Dotting of the Eyes’ 2019

A tradition of Chinese dragon boating is dotting the eyes of the dragon heads. Dragon Boat Festival, also known as Duanwu Festival, is a traditional and important celebration in China and generally falls in early June.

Paddlers for Life Windermere honour this event by dotting the eyes of the dragon heads by painting pupils on the eyes. The idea is that of awakening the power of the dragons to provide strength and protection.

You can read about one idea of the origins of the traditions of the ceremony here.

This year some of the newer members were called on to paint in our dragon’s eye pupils.

A newer member 'dots the eyes' of one of the dragon boat heads.

Ruth outlined the origins and meanings of this tradition.

As usual paddlers brought food to share, acknowledging the role of supporters in helping to keep breast cancer dragon boat paddling activities on Windermere.

Another great day of paddling.

And lovely to see one of our greatest supporters.

We had a wonderful day and the sun shone down on our wonderful supporters during a shared Jacob’s Join lunch to say many thanks for all they do for us Survivors. It was lovely to have newer members awakening our Dragons and Dotting their eyes celebrating Chinese Tradition together on beautiful Lake Windermere.
